Connecting through a right-based approach

A self-paced e-learning experience for the delivery of inclusive practice in aged care

Introduction to the module

About the modules

Every older person is an individual shaped by their preferences, personal characteristics, life experiences and beliefs. Therefore, every episode of care you provide will be different, responding to the individual and what’s important to them.

Irrespective of the service you are providing, the circumstances or environment in which they are being provided, your practice and approach must reflect a rights-based approach.

So, what does a rights-based approach involve?

A rights-based approach involves the delivery of high-quality care that focuses on the older person. It places the older person at the centre of care and emphasizes that older people must be afforded dignity, respect, equality and the protection from discrimination and abuse. This approach places older people at the forefront, empowering them to make choices and decisions that affect their lives.

The Connecting through a rights-based approach e-learning seeks to build your understanding of a rights-based approach in practice.
Each of the self-paced e-learning modules provides you with an opportunity to understand how your interactions with an older person might impact their experience of the service and their care and support outcomes.

You create the story ending depending on the care and support decisions you make along the way.

The modules are designed to challenge you and your approach, so every path you take is an opportunity to reflect, learn and improve.

Set yourself up for success

To maximise your experience of the learning, it is recommended that you set aside one hour per story.  This includes following different pathways to understand how different choices might impact the outcome.

At the conclusion of each storyline it is recommended that you take time to reflect on your choices and the outcomes.  A series of reflective questions is included for each storyline.

Instructions

Click on one of the images of the 3 characters to begin.   Your selected character will introduce you to the story and provide context.

Each scene in the story is interactive and you will find buttons that allow you to make choices that affect the direction of the story.  As you progress through the story, your choices will determine its outcome. These choices may lead you down different paths, influencing the direction and events of the story.

Every scene includes audio narration and text to enhance your learning experience.  If you prefer to disable closed captions, look for the [cc] button located on the bottom left corner of the screen.  Click on this button to turn off closed captions. To re-enable them, click the button again.

To access additional materials related to the module, follow the links provided.  Alternatively, where instructed, navigate to the 'Resources' section at the top right of the screen.  Click on the 'Resources' header to explore supplementary content that can complement your learning.

When you reach the end of a story, you will receive feedback on your choices and progress.  At this point, you can choose to:
  • Return to the main menu to start a new story or module.
  • Exit the module if you have completed your current session.

Please enjoy the dynamic nature of the story as it adapts based on the choices you make.
